The annual Makabayan Week was once again celebrated by the Grade School Department of Jose Maria College last January 28 to February 5, 2009 with the theme “Increase Competitiveness Through Worthwhile Experience.” The objective of this week-long event was to foster in every student nationalism and patriotism through the various activities mapped out for the said event. |

The highlights of this event were the Makabayan Trivia, Film Viewing, Poster Making contest, Salad and Fresh Fruit Shake Making contest, Quiz Bowl and Fiesta sa Nayon. The Film Viewing was held during the first two days of the celebration. The said activity aimed to develop the student's essential values through appreciating and criticizing films. One of the movies featured was the “Free Willy” which indeed fascinated the young Jmarians. With different styles and themes, the Poster Making Contest really caught the attention of the teachers and students for the students who participated in the contest proved to be potential champions in the world of visual arts. This contest was held on the third day of the Makabayan week. The objective of this contest was to enhance the child's creativity in order to prepare him to engage in honest and gainful work experience. Prior to the conclusion of the week-long celebration, the Quiz Bowl, which was participated by different groups from every grade level, was held at the JMC Sky Gymnasium. This day was marked with wittiness and intelligence as the contestants answered a number of Makabayan-related questions ranging from the easy to more challenging ones. The winners for the different contests were announced on the last day of the celebration. For the Poster Making Contest, Andrew Adajar got the first prize, Indirah Jade Bandola the second prize and Art Stephen Cutor the third prize. On the other hand, Stephanie Maree Apalit and her partner Chryzamae P. Samson bagged the first prize for the Quiz Bowl; while Hannah Princess Pancho and Vanessa Dale Cascabel landed on the second place; and John Vincent Cabusas and his partner Mariel Balog ended third. The group of Jenquie Karen Alinsonorin, Elyza Violle Ensomo, Victoria Manaday and Eugene Renz Philip Mananes got the first prize for the Fresh Fruit-Shake Making contest; the second placer was the group of Abeguil Castillano and the group of Aloe Katheryn Gaquing was the third placer. For the Salad Making Contest, the group of Samantha Gabuyo, Akari Inagaki, Kenji Bandivas, Rico Daniel O. Catacutan, Lawrence Bridge Valencia, Zsa-zsa Marie Bete and Marcus Victor Peters snatched the gold from the other competing groups. The Makabayan Week ended with a blast, leaving the kiddie JMARIANS fond memories and new practical and intellectual learnings which will surely develop them as responsible and knowledgeable young individuals. |
